VITAMIN A + CAMPAIGN
About this category: Health
|
UNICEF sponsored VITAMIN A + CAMPAIGN is going to be launched soon.It will be held on the 6th June,2009 in Bangladesh. All the children of 0-5 years age will receive one high potential vitamin A capsule and all children of 1-6 years age will receive one deworming tablet on that day.The vitamin A capsule prevents night blindness, measles and diarrhea.Deworming tablet stops drainage of nutrients from the child body and thus enhances the capacity of the child to retain the constituents of food.Every year many children all victim of the above mentioned diseases.Hence, proper implementation of this campaign is very essential for the betterment of the humanity. All people of political and religious allegiance should come forward to implement this program keeping aside their differences.Following news item from Nepal may be an eye opener for all concerned.
KATHMANDU, Nepal, 7 November 2007 – In a unique show of support for children’s rights, Nepalese political parties that have been locked in bitter infighting put aside their differences for two days last week to support the national distribution of vitamin A capsules and de-worming tablets.
Some 3.7 million children – ranging in age from six months to five years – received vitamin A supplements as part of the nationwide campaign to protect children’s health by boosting their immune systems.
Across the country, parents brought their children to health clinics, distribution centres and sanctioned private homes to receive the important health interventions.
“We’re here to ensure that our younger brother Dorje receives this vitamin so that he can stay healthy and free from diseases,” said Nima, 12, who had come with his two younger brothers, Pasang and Dorje, on their way to school.
“Every mother in the village believes that the vitamin A supplement will make their babies healthier and have already turned up,” said Female Community Health Volunteer Nirmala Khadka, who had made her house available as a distribution centre in Alapot village, on the outskirts of Kathmandu.
“All of this has been made possible by the support from all our partners and the hardworking Female Community Health Volunteers, who take it upon themselves to ensure that all children receive these life saving supplements,” said UNICEF Representative in Nepal Gillian Mellsop.
Escalating tensions
Nepal has been in the throes of escalating turmoil since early this year. The Constituent Assembly elections, which were scheduled for 22 November, have been indefinitely postponed because of serious differences between the major political parties.
Concerned that this would impact the campaign, UNICEF issued a press release urging all parties to support and facilitate the health campaign. A coalition of 13 Madhesi political parties issued a joint press statement expressing support for significant public health intervention for children.
“UNICEF is most appreciative of this support, as vitamin A capsules are responsible for preventing the deaths of more than 12,000 Nepalese children every year, and protecting another 2,000 from going blind,” said Ms. Mellsop.

FLOWER VASE
About this category: Culture
|
Last night I sat in a sofa beside a flower vase. The vase was sitting on the small table.A combination of white tuberose and red rose were in the vase. The chinese vase presented a wonderful look with the fresh flowers which started to bloom in the night. The air was flooded with the strange mix of fragrance of the two species of flowers.Sometimes the fragrance of the tuberose dominated and swept the room. The room was dark.I was amazed by a strange feeling for hours together in the flowery room where I sat alone.I felt that I was sitting in a paradise space and enjoying a divine pleasure.
Flowers are good friends of life.

UNCTAD XII: EXPECTATIONS!!!
|
As a Ghanaian witnessing the ongoing UNCTAD XII with Ghana as a host, I cannot let this historic and historical event pass without serious comments.
I expect that UNCTAD XII will evolve
1. A clear approach to addressing the global imbalance of trade between the industralised nations and the developing ones.
2. A detailed framework to combat climate change and to guarantee food security
3.A paradigm shifting approach to doing business in Africa, one that ensures the full participation of Africans in the exploitation and enjoyment of their resources.
UNCTAD XII must show the new way that promotes countries as partners in development, not as competitors.

PRESS SATEMENT ON THE EPA DEBATE

TOMORROW LEADERS GHANA
Developing Tomorrow Leaders Today
26th November 2007
PRESS RELEASE
THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION’S PROPOSED ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT (EPA): AN UNFAIR IMPOSITION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ACP COUNTRIES
After a careful study and critical analysis of The Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), which the European Commission (EC) is currently negotiating with 76 counties of the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP), Tomorrow Leaders Ghana (TLG), a youth organization in Ghana deems it expedient and highly imperative to state that the pressure the EC is exerting on these poor countries to sign the document latest by December 31st 2007 is unfair and unnecessary.
The approach of the EC negotiators is in clear contradiction to the conclusions of the EU Council of Ministers which states that Europe “fully respects the right of all ACP states and regions to determine the best policies for their development”
Unfortunately Europe is undermining the fundamental principle of partnership and misusing its unequal bargaining power in the negotiation room to push what it considers the best development vision for these poor countries
Apart from its unacceptable threats, the use of increased development aid or assistance as lobbying and a bargaining tool in the negotiations severely undermines the sincerity of Europe’s claim to be working in partnership with developing countries.
Why is the EC forcing ACP countries to choose between sudden trade disruptions and Free Trade Agreement (FTA) provisions which could jeopardize their future developments. To us this is highly unjust and unacceptable in a civilized and democratic world
Giving the short time period remaining and the deep problems with the EPA, it is impossible to reach an agreement that adequately addresses the needs of developing countries by 31st December 2007.
It is evident enough that EC has clear interim measures that could be put in place by Europe to remove the pressure from the negotiators and guarantee continued access of ACP exports beyond December 31st 2007
TLG’s concerns are that:
• Proposals by the EC to cut tariffs would undermine food security and local manufacturing
• The proposed new intellectual property rules would limit the ACP countries for that matter Ghana to educational materials, technology and seed for farmers
• The proposed competition rules by the EC will favour only large corporations and investors from Europe instead of facilitating partnership in development
• The proposed new rules on government procurement would hinder the government of ACP countries from using its expenditure to stimulate local development
• The proposed rules on services could reduce poor people’s access to critical services such as banking and telecom and make ACP countries more vulnerable to financial crises.
• The proposed trade liberalization is detrimental to our political and social health and consequently has negative effects on the youth of today
• The deliberate attempt to raise tariffs and cut down aid to ACP countries as bait to get the agreement signed is against fundamental principle of justice and a such the pressure mounted on ACP countries be avoided.
In conclusion we wish to state that:
• EC as a matter of urgency should consider options of safeguarding the current levels of access to European market for ACP countries whiles negotiations still progresses in a calm atmosphere until an agreement is reached that adequately addresses development.
To provide certainty, Europe should provide all ACP states guaranteed access to the European market in 2008 by adapting Generalised System of Preferences( GSP) Plus and Every thing But Arms (EBA) schemes
• We also call on ACP countries and for that matter Ghana government not to sign the EPA until their interest and the concerns raised by TLG are appropriately addressed
• Europe must act urgently to change the approach of its negotiation. European importers and ACP exporters need legal certainty to continue their business operations into 2008 without threat to livelihoods.

The WAR on TERROR
|
It is understanble that world peace must be secured through all possible and right means, spearheaded by the most advance countries. After Septmeber 11, all sorts of wars have been declared in various parts of the globe, the most obvious being the ones raging in Afghanistan and Iraq.
After a careful and thoughtful consideration, I shudder to ask myself if the world will not have been be more peaceful and just and secured if the over $576 Billion spent on the Iraqi war was used to bring development to the doorsteps of the greatest majority of developing countries.
The cost of wars have always surpassed the achievements and the alternative of promoting peace and development.

LUCKY DUBE IS IMMORTAL
|
Those who have always tried to eliminate good people from the surface of the earth forget one thing: those they kill turn to live n eternally.
Jesus Christ was killed but He lves on to today in the minds and the hearts of billions of people.
Martin Luther King Jnr, Kwame Nkrumah, Patrice Lumumba,Mahatma Gandhi and still counting...they all live on and continue to influence the course of humanity.
To those who killed Lucky Dube in Jo'burg, i want to tell them they made a big mistake because good people like him will remain in the minds and hearts of those whose lives he touched.
God forgive them of their sins.
